The star of the Mexican national team, Javier Hernández aka “Chicharito,” wasn’t the one to score the winning goal Saturday the Rose Bowl, in which Mexico beat the U.S. team 4-2 in the CONACAF Gold Cup final. That distinction went to his teammate, Giovani dos Santos.
But the celebrated former star of Guadalajara’s Chivas and current Manchester United forward, whose nickname means “little pea” in Spanish, is the inspiration for what seems like countless musical tributes. There is the ridiculously catchy reggaeton-style Chicharito song, along with Chicharito corridos, cumbias and more.
This one stands out, a Chicharito tribute in English sung to the tune of Jose Feliciano’s “Chico and the Man” theme from the 1970s TV series.
Other standouts? A bizzare Chipmunks-style version of the reggaeton hit:
Then there’s this very danceable cumbia:
And an earnestly-performed “Corrido del Chicharrito:”
Lastly, speaking of earnest, it’s hard not to smile watching these two fans’ lip-synched rendition of the Chicharito song:
The ardent fan love for Mexico’s national team was evident in the coverage of the game. Congratulations to Chicharito, Giovani and the team.
